Low-slope and flat roofs are a different animal from a pitched shingle roof — they don't shed water by steepness, so the membrane and the drainage are everything. They're common on commercial buildings and on flat sections of residential homes (porches, additions, modern designs). The three workhorse systems are EPDM (a durable rubber membrane), modified bitumen (an asphalt-based membrane in rolled plies), and built-up roofing (BUR — the classic layered tar-and-gravel assembly).

Because there's no slope to help, the failure points on a flat roof are the seams, the flashings, and anywhere water can pond — so a flat roof lives or dies on detailing. Part of the job is deciding honestly whether the existing roof can take a recover or needs a full tear-off down to the deck; recovering a wet or failing substrate just buries the problem. Proper drainage, sealed seams, and clean flashing and penetration details are what keep a low-slope roof dry for the long haul.
