Roofing help for seniors and veterans

Liberty Roofing does not run a senior or veteran assistance program, and we're not going to invent one to get this page to rank. What follows is the real help that actually exists for an Alabama homeowner — a state grant, a state tax credit, financing, and insurance — explained honestly, with no eligibility promised.

Four real ways to pay for a roof — none of them are Liberty's

We're not the source of any of these four. We're a licensed roofing contractor who can tell you which one actually fits your situation and do the work once you've chosen a path.

The Alabama roof grant — up to $10,000

The Strengthen Alabama Homes program pays up to $10,000 toward upgrading a roof to the FORTIFIED standard, and it doesn't need to be repaid. There's no income cap — a senior or veteran homeowner qualifies the same way any homeowner does. Liberty is NOT on the state's approved-contractor list (21 contractors, checked 2026-08-17) — grant-funded work has to go to a contractor from that official list.

The AL income tax credit — up to $3,000

Alabama offers a state income-tax credit of up to $3,000 for mitigation work under Code of Alabama § 40-18-15.5, per the Strengthen Alabama Homes FAQ (Q4) (as of 2026-08-18). This is a tax credit, not a grant — it reduces what you owe rather than paying a contractor directly, and it isn't guaranteed to apply to every project or every filer. It is not tax advice; confirm your own eligibility with a tax professional before you count on it.

Financing — the option when neither of the above fits

If damage isn't storm-related and a grant window isn't open, financing is the practical path for many homeowners, including seniors and veterans working with a fixed income. Liberty has offered financing programs to help spread the cost, though we don't publish rates, terms, or approval odds here — those come from the lender, not from us.

Insurance — when the damage is actually a claim

If a storm caused the damage, that's an insurance question before it's a grant or financing question. Sudden wind or hail damage is generally covered; age and wear generally aren't — the same rule applies whether you're a senior, a veteran, or neither. We document the roof and help you understand what your policy is likely to cover.

Liberty is not on the Strengthen Alabama Homes approved-contractor list and does not perform grant-funded work. See the official list. The tax-credit figure above is not tax advice — confirm your own eligibility with a tax professional.

Not sure which path fits? Tell us the situation and we will point you at the right one, even when it is not us.

The part that matters most after a storm

Seniors and veterans are the most-targeted homeowners after a storm

Out-of-state storm-chasing crews target older and veteran homeowners specifically, because a door-knocker with an urgent pitch and a contract to sign on the spot works better on someone who wants to trust a fellow veteran or a polite young salesman. The pattern repeats after every named storm on this coast.

Do not sign anything on the doorstep, especially anything described as an “assignment of benefits” or a document that lets a contractor deal with your insurance company directly on your behalf. Get a second opinion, check a license number, and take the time a real roof problem allows you to take.

How to choose a roofing contractor

Three checks before you sign anything

  • Verify the license number yourself, not just the truck decal.
  • Ask if they're asking you to sign an assignment of benefits — and if so, say no.
  • Get it in writing, and take at least a day before you decide.

Talk it through, no pressure

We'll help you figure out which path actually fits

Tell us about your roof and your situation. We'll walk you through the grant, the tax credit, financing, and insurance honestly, and tell you when we don't think one applies.

Common questions

Senior & veteran roofing assistance FAQ

Are there roof replacement grants for seniors in Alabama?
There's no grant specifically limited to seniors that we can verify exists in Baldwin or Mobile County. What is real and open to any qualifying homeowner, senior or not: the Strengthen Alabama Homes grant, up to $10,000 toward a FORTIFIED roof, with no income cap. If a senior-specific program exists that we haven't found, we'd rather say we don't know than invent one — call your county's Council on Aging or Area Agency on Aging office to ask about anything beyond SAH.
Is there roof replacement assistance for seniors specifically?
Not a Liberty-run program, and not a verified senior-only state program beyond the general SAH grant, which has no age or income restriction. If you're a senior homeowner working out how to pay for a needed roof, the most useful next step is a direct conversation — we'll walk through the grant, the tax credit, financing, and insurance, and tell you honestly which applies to your situation rather than pointing you at something we can't confirm.
Is there roof replacement assistance for veterans?
We haven't verified a veteran-specific roofing assistance program active in Baldwin or Mobile County, and we're not going to name one we can't back up. Veteran homeowners qualify for the same SAH grant, tax credit, and financing paths as any other Alabama homeowner. If a VA-connected home-modification benefit applies to your specific situation, that's a conversation with the VA, not with a roofing contractor — we can tell you what the roof itself needs either way.
Are there roofing grants in Alabama for low-income homeowners?
The Strengthen Alabama Homes grant has no income limit, so it isn't income-restricted in either direction — a lower-income homeowner qualifies on the same terms as anyone else, as long as the home is an owner-occupied primary residence in a participating county, insured, in good repair, and not listed for sale. We're not aware of a separate income-restricted roofing grant specific to this area; the honest answer is to start with SAH and ask about anything additional when you apply.
Does Liberty Roofing offer a senior or military discount?
We're not going to claim a standing discount program here that isn't confirmed — the honest answer is to ask us directly when you call. What we can tell you for certain is that a free inspection and a free estimate apply to every homeowner regardless of age or service, and we'll always tell you plainly what a roof actually needs before you commit to anything.
