GAF is the initials of the company's historical name, the General Aniline and Film Corporation, carried forward as a brand long after the business became a roofing manufacturer. Nothing about the letters describes a product grade or a quality tier, which is worth knowing because the name gets used online as though it did.

Do the wind ratings on these shingles mean my roof is rated for that wind speed?

Not by itself. Attachment technology: A laminated design GAF calls LayerLock, with a widened nailing area it markets as the largest target on a shingle.
Published wind rating: GAF publishes a wind warranty with no maximum wind-speed limit, and states it carries no named-storm exclusion. It applies only when the shingle is installed together with a required combination of qualifying GAF accessories: starter, deck protection, ridge cap, and a leak barrier or attic ventilation. Without that full set, coverage falls back to the standard shingle and accessory limited warranty.

CertainTeed's own pages do not agree on the upgraded figure, which is the single best argument on this page for reading the spec sheet attached to your quote rather than a marketing number.
Algae resistance: StreakFighter, which CertainTeed describes as protecting against the black streaks caused by airborne algae. The pages we read do not state a copper composition, so we do not claim one. Algae protection runs as its own separate limited term.

Warranty structure, not warranty length

Homeowners compare warranty by the headline term, which is the least informative number on the page. All four manufacturers build the same three-layer structure underneath it, and the structure is what determines whether a claim actually pays.

Layer one is the base limited warranty on the shingle itself. It comes with the product, needs no program and no registration, and covers manufacturing defects in the material. It generally does not cover labor beyond an early window, and everything prorates over time.

Layer two is the early non-prorated period, the stretch at the beginning where coverage is at full value rather than depreciated. This is the number worth asking about, because it is where nearly every legitimate material claim actually lands.

Layer three is the enhanced or system coverage. Each manufacturer gates this behind two conditions at once: the roof has to be built with a required number of that manufacturer's own accessories, and the contractor has to be enrolled in its program. That second condition is the one nobody explains, and it is why a brand alone never tells you what coverage a finished roof carries.

Notice what is missing from all of that: any specific number of years. Attic heat and trapped moisture cook a shingle from underneath, and no granule technology addresses that.
